Thankfully, it was the former -- and easy to install on my SUV thanks to great instructions. I had it hooked up within a few minutes and it transported 2 adult bikes nicely with no problems whatsoever (holds up to 3). It connects by 2 top, side and bottom straps on each side of the unit. Disassembly took about 30 seconds as well. It arrived two days prior to our vacation, but unfortunately the thick plastic panels on the hatch of the vehicle seemingly would not allow ANY rack to fit safely. While the vehicle design itself may have prevented proper installation, it would seem that the manufacturer did not confirm compatibility with this one. The rack did seem to be of good quality and it was a plus that it was made domestically, but we had to return it (and couldn't bring the bikes on vacation). Note that this (and likely any trunk-mounted rack) is not intended for use above 65 mph. This alone may have led me to return it, as that is an unrealistic speed in Michigan.
